On Saturday, October 11, 2014, RPA will participate in the Richmond Heart Walk which supports the American Heart Association in its fight against heart disease and strokes. RPA members wishing to participate in this event can either join the walk or work as a volunteer. The Heart Walk has 1 mile and 5K (3.1 mile)
options available for walkers. We hope members, along with their families and friends, will join with the RPA Executive Board in serving the community by helping bring awareness to this important cause by participating in the walk.
Additionally, we will be spending one evening at the Hospital Hospitality House providing and serving dinner to patients and their families staying at the House. Following dinner we will assist with a rousing evening of bingo. As you may know, the Hospital Hospitality House provides lodging for patients and their families who are receiving treatment at MCV Hospital. The specific night has not yet been decided but it will be during the month of October and will probably be October 7, 8 or 13.
For anyone wishing to participate in either of the above events, please contact Lee Ann Wilson or Linda Richards at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Specific Volunteer opportunities:
River City Buddy Ball is always happy to have Buddies on Saturdays from 9-11:00 a.m.to help with Buddy Football and Cheerleading and other activities. Buddies are paired with an individual with special needs to help them play the game – some simply need direction on when to run, some need their wheelchair pushed to where they are supposed to go. Football season starts September 13 and runs in to November if anyone is interested in volunteering more than just October. The website is www.rivercitybuddyball.org. RPA volunteers can email Jillian Sherman at email@example.com with additional questions.
The Down Syndrome Association of Greater Richmond (DSAGR) has their annual Step Up for Down Syndrome 5k and Walk on Saturday, October 11th in Innsbrook and needs volunteers Thursday, Friday and Saturday to help make the event happen. Volunteers can sign up at http://www.dsagr.com/home/5k1.
RPA members can also join the Squirmin’ Shermans and walk or run (cost for registration, fundraising is optional). Please email Jillian Sherman at firstname.lastname@example.org with additional questions. DSAGR always has volunteer opportunities (September gala, monthly meetings/childcare & activities, education conference) that can be found at www.dsagr.com.
