Suggested CP Study Publications
The following publications are helpful for study and can be purchased at www.nala.org.
- Certified Paralegal Exam Review Manual, 3rd edition
- Certified Paralegal Study Guide and Mock Exam, 4th edition
- NALA Manual for Paralegals, 5th edition
You should also prepare for the exam by using other textbooks and real-world experience. NALA has adopted Strunk & White’s The Elements of Style as the authority for the Communications section of the exam. NALA has also adopted A Uniform System of Citation (Harvard Law Review Association) as the authority for the Legal Research section.
You will be able to find Self Study Programs on NALA’s web site as well. In addition, NALA offers a 2 1/2 day program (The CP Short Course) each fall to help prepare for the exam.
Here is a suggested weekly study schedule:
Week 1 – Communications
Week 2 – Human Relations/Ethics
Week 3 – Judgment and Analytical Ability
Week 4 – Substantive Law – General, The American Legal System
Week 5 – Legal Research
Week 6 – Civil Litigation
Week 7 – Family Law
Week 8 – Contracts
Week 9 - Real Estate
Week 10 – Business Organizations
Week 11 – Estate Planning and Probate
Week 12 - Bankruptcy
Week 13 - Criminal Law and Procedure
Week 14 - Administrative Law
The exam is administered during the months of January, May, and September.
Registration deadlines are: December 1 for the January exam; April 1 for the May exam; and August 1 for the September exam.
